The formula is C6H8O7

citric-acid

Citric acid's (C6H8O7) 'proper' name is 3-carboxyl-3-hydroxypentanedioc acid. This tells us that there is a carboxylic group at each end of chain of five carbon atoms. It also tells us that on the third carbon atom there is a hydroxyl group and another carboxylic group.

I'm not sure for certain, but I'm pretty sure the structural formula for this is:

COOHCH2COH(COOH)CH2COOH

CH3COOH is citric acid's formula.

Empirical formula is the simplest whole number ratio of atoms in a substance. THIS MEANS THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE EMPIRICAL FORMULA FOR A GIVEN SUBSTANCE.

that's wrong...its C6H8O7... C2O2H4 DOESN'T MAKE SENSE.
