Actually they've been around for a lot longer than that, and free I might add at Project Gutenburg. The Ereader itself with EInk was first developed in 2001 and hit the market in Japan in 2004 and was a Sony. Kindle didn't come out until around 2007.
But E books have been around since about 1971 if not before, because that's just when Project Gutenburg was started.
