The Spruce Goose
Designed, engineered and constructed by Howard Hughes in 1947
I believe it was the "Spruce Goose" built by Howard Hughes.
Howard Hughes, president of Hughes Aircraft Corporation, flew his plane, The H-4 Hercules nicknamed the Spruce Goose, in 1947. The Hercules (Spruce Goose) is the largest flying boat ever built, and has the largest wingspan of any aircraft in history. It survives in good condition at the Evergreem Avoatopm Museum in McMinnville, Oregon.
it was called "The Spruce Goose" by the press and the name stuck
It was called the "Spruce Goose" because it was built out of wood.

Except for Spruce Goose, mocking nickname by the American press for the H-4 Hercules flying boat, created and flown by millionaire Howard Hughes, played by Leonardo DiCaprio in "The Aviator, although the airplane was really made of birch instead of spruce. Beautiful airplane, the Spruce Goose.......but that's another story.
