Germany's first U-Boat, number U-1, descended from a batch of newly constructed submarines for Russia during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905. Russia received four or five submarines, and Germany commissioned it's first U-Boat in 1906.

The first German submarine, U-1, was based on the subs built and purchased by Russia during the Russo-Japanese War in 1904, and was launched in 1906.
The first "used" German U-boat was U-1, designed from the group of submarines purchased by Russia during the Russo-Japanese War in 1904. However, the U-1 was commissioned into the German navy one year after the Russo-Japanese War in 1906.

people never know but: The U-Boat, or undersea boat, was first created by Cornelius Drebbel in the 1500's or by John Holland in the 1800's. The more popular U-Boat used in World War 2 was invented by Helmut Walther.
The original first U-boats (U-boat type) built for Russia during the Russo-Japanese War in 1904 had a complement of about 12 men.
German U-boats were originally made for Russia in 1904 during their war with Japan (Russo-Japanese War 1904-1905). The German Kaiser was a relative to the Russian Tsar and cheered him on into fighting Japan. The Kaiser would even throw in some U-boats to help his cousin out! In any event, the submarines weren't outfitted in time to participate in any naval actions, all fighting during that war was settled by battleships (pre-dreadnaughts). The first German U-boat was launched in 1906, a year after the Russo-Japanese War ended.
