You actually can not tell by that model number, the only thing it really shows is that it is a 38" cut built the 4th quarter of the year, the "d" is what shows the quarter. If it in fact has a Briggs engine on it, you can look at the code and the the year of the engine. If it is the original engine you can assume it to be that year or the following year. The code number on the Briggs as an example, 01082552, would be read as the first 2 digits are the year, 2001, the next 2 are the month, August, the next 2 are the day, the 25th, and the last 2 are the assembly line, the 52 line.
