The U.S. Navy's USS Holland (SS-1) was commissioned on October 12, 1900. She was named after famed submarine inventor John Philip Holland. The company founded to build the Holland still exists today as one of the world's premier submarine builders - General Dynamics' Electric Boat Division.

Submarine warfare has existed since the early 1900's, and continues to this day. Though the last ship sinking by a submarine was in the Falklands War, the evolving missions of submarines have taken submarine warfare well beyond just sinking ships and submarines.
