take the boat out of the water.
have the following items ready to use. you need them all and now is the time to get them together.
paper towels, speedy dry, torpedo level, engine oil storage pan, allen wrench for oil plug, new oil plug washer, (don't use the old one), oil filter, oil filter wrench, 5 qts suzuki 4 stroke oil, (don't kid yourself, use suzuki oil only!), and a clean funnel.
level the motor with a torpedo level set on the cavitation plate, and keep the level handy. check from time to time. the motor must be level or you will either overfill or under fill. both are bad.
run the motor with ear muffs and water until the water runs warm out the exhaust.
shut off the engine. remove the key.
shut off the water and remove the hose and ear muffs. pull it away so you won't trip over it.
WARNING! if you think changing the lower unit oil is messy, wait until you spill a couple of qts of motor oil on the ground that already has 100 gallons of water on it!
lay out the above items where they can be easily accessed
tell your Friend's to screw.
loosen the oil drain plug and remove the oil fill cap. removing this cap now may seem a mistake, but, if you follow the instructions below, you will have more control of the draining oil.
pick up the oil storage pan and hold it against the lower unit just below the drain plug, keeping it tilted up at the other end. the oil comes out in a stream up to a foot away from the engine. don't worry, it will slow down and you will be able to set the pan on the ground. your biggest enemy is your foot and the
wind.
once the oil has slowed down, pack the area below the oil filter with paper towels and remove the filter.
open the new filter, coat the captive "o" ring with your finger dipped in motor oil, and screw it on the engine hand tight. you can check for leaks later.
when the oil has drained, replace the drain plug, using a new washer.
tilt the motor up until you can comfortably pour 4 qts of oil thru the funnel and into the engine.
put the engine down and check for level with the torpedo level.
check dipstick and add enough oil read the middle of the 2 holes. remove the paper towels.
hook up the ear muffs, turn on water, and run the engine for about 2 minutes.
stop the engine and check oil level. add oil if necessary.
start engine and check for oil leaks.
REMEMBER- work slowly and carefully. keep it clean!

The serial number, or the year model is also needed to answer this question. The 70hp engine underwent a major redesign, resulting in a significant weight difference.
