remove the 5/8 nuts on the side of the gearcase also the two under the cav plate and the back one the gearcase is the same as all of mercury,s v-6 outboards 81-current
i have a 1996 mystique and just changed the thermostat . all i done was followed the top radiator hose right to the thermostat. there should be 3 bolts, pull the hose off and there it was
Mercury Marine used the blue colored cowling band during the period of mid 70, to early mid 1980. All Mercury outboards manufactured in this era, require a 50:1 ratio, one pint of 2 cycle oil, to six gallons of fuel.
The previous answer is incorrect! The 3.0 and 3.3 liter engines used in all the Mercury Villagers and Nissan Quests from 1993-2002 have the thermostat installed just the opposite of most all other engines. The spring side of the thermostat goes into the thermostat housing not the engine block as was previously stated below. Flat Side Outward, Spring Side Toward Engine

Sounds like a bad thermostat
The thermostat was installed backwards - this prevents any coolant from getting to the heater core. Take it out, flip it over and all should be warm and toasty. See "Related Questions" below for more
