Emus do not have any specific shelter. They will avoid the heat if possible by staying under trees. They only ever build nests at breeding time, and these nests are dug out of the ground and lined with sticks, leaves and grass.

My 'pet' emus seem to just sit near each other in the bush at night. On several occasions I have seen them in the deep dusk, sitting quietly near each other. I am still trying to check this behaviour, but they come at first light (for their morning wheat) from the same area that I've seen them 'bedding down.' I've noted also that they will quite contentedly sit in the open in pouring Winter rain. I suppose that their insulation is very good. Mark

Emus do not have a set dwelling. They are nomadic birds. They can be found almost anywhere in Australia except within urban areas, although they can be found on the outskirts of these areas.

Emus range from coastal areas, where they are becoming increasingly rarer due to developments and roads, to the sub-Alpine regions. Therefore, they can take a range of temperatures from cool-temperate to hot-temperate.

The male emu builds the nest, rather than the female. He scratches up grass, twigs, leaves and bark around a hollow on the ground, in grasslands or open bushland. The nest measures between one and two metres wide, and the walls are about ten centimetres thick.

What is unusual about emus?

Emus are large, flightless birds which are native to Australia. While there are no natural predators of emus in Australia, these birds have a unique defence capability, which would aid them if they were in the position of having to outrun a superior predator. When running at top speed, the physiological structure of their feet enables them to make sudden 180-degree turns which not even a small cat can do: by the time a bigger creature slowed enough to make the turn, the emu would be 50-60 metres ahead in the opposite direction.

How an emu protects itself?

Being large and fast, emus do not need to defend themselves very often. Apart from man, there are no natural predators of adult emus in Australia.
