they would lose the pink pigmentation and in turn would eventually fade to a white or grey. if you look at the baby flamingos they are of grey colour this is because they have not been exposed to the effects of shrimp.

What or who eats shrimp?

Many, many animals eat shrimp. The pink coloration of flamingos comes from their diet, which includes shrimp; flamingos in zoos which are fed other things turn white. Many people also eat shrimp, though since it's forbidden by Jewish dietary law, most Jews do not.

What animal gets its color from eating brine shimp?

Flamingos, after eating brine shrimp they become pink. The color will gradually build up in their system. Flamingos in a zoo would be white if only fed fish, which is why they receive supplements in their feed.

What do flamingos eat to turn blue?

"Young flamingos hatch with grey plumage, but adults range from light pink to bright red due to aqueous bacteria and beta carotene obtained from their food supply. A well-fed, healthy flamingo is more vibrantly coloured and thus a more desirable mate. A white or pale flamingo, however, is usually unhealthy or malnourished. Captive flamingos are a notable exception; many turn a pale pink as they are not fed carotene at levels comparable to the wild. This is changing as more zoos begin to add prawns and other supplements to the diets of their flamingos." ~ Excerpted from the Wikipedia article on Flamingos

Why are flamingos the only pink animal?

Something about the way they digest food, the color comes from proteins found in their diets. Well fed healthy flamingos will be brighter, and the paler ones are malnourished.

Do flamingos help humans in any way?

Flamingos do not eat humans. They eat a lot of shrimp, also mollusks, plankton, crabs, small fish and insect larvae. They also eat some plants like grass shoots and algae. As to whether they *could* eat a human... I suppose it is possible, but only if someone ground up a human and fed it to a flamingo in tiny, tiny pieces. Which would of course also be gross, unethical, and illegal.

What would happen if you fed a lizard Play-Doh?

I have no idea, but i wouldn't try it!

Can you put a ghost shrimp with an African Dwarf Frog?

It depends on the size of the shrimp. If the shrimp is smaller or the same size as the frog, the frog will probably try to eat it. If the shrimp is large you should be OK, as long as your frog is well fed.

How do flamingos stay at zoos without flying away?

What do flamingos like to eat?

Flamingos filter-feed on brine shrimp. Their oddly-shaped beaks are specially adapted to separate mud and silt from the food they eat, and are uniquely used upside-down. The filtering of food items is assisted by hairy structures called lamellae which line the mandibles, and the large rough-surfaced tongue. The flamingo's characteristic pink colouring is caused by the Beta carotene in their diet. The source of this varies by species, but shrimp and blue-green algae are common sources; zoo-fed flamingos may be given food with the additive canthaxanthin, which is often also given to farmed salmon. Flamingos produce a "milk" like pigeon milk due to the action of a hormone called prolactin (see Columbidae). It contains more fat and less protein than the latter does, and it is produced in glands lining the whole of the upper digestive tract, not just the crop. Both parents nurse their chick, and young flamingos feed on this milk, which also contains red and white blood cells, for about two months until their bills are developed enough to filter feed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flamingo#Diet

Why are flamingos pink in the wild?

Pink FlamingosFlamingos are pink because of the food they eat, which is shrimp and algae.Additional InputIt's not the the color of the food that makes the flamingo pink, but the chemicals inside.Flamingos are pink if they have a lot of food containing beta carotene in their diet (i.e shrimp). The coloring is actually a derivative of a class of plant-produced compounds called carotenoids-that is, carotene and its chemical cousins. Flamingoes in the wild eat shrimp, which is pink. The flamingo body may not process other colorful chemicals the way it processes carotene. Often times when flamingos are fed at a zoo, their diets are much different than their diet would be in the wild. Flamingoes in the wild eat shrimp, which is pink. Therefore flamingos in a zoo habitatand that aren't fed shrimp lose their pink color, so zookeepers must add food coloring to the food! The depth and shade of their pink depends on how much suitable carotenoid they eat. In order to have flamingoes that remain pink in captivity, various colouring agents are fed to them; normally the same agents that are fed to farmed salmon so they have pink meat. This answer is completely wrong! I'm pretty sure shrimps do not contain beta carotene. Beta carotene is an orange (not pink) pigment found in carrots and is a precursor to vitamin A. Whereas Astaxanthine is a pink pigment produced by plants and algae. It is Astaxanthine that give Flamingos their pink color. When shrimps eat algae the astaxanthine contained in them is incorporated into their chitin shell. When the Flamingos eat the shrimps the flamingos then incorporate the pigment into their feathers. Incidentally this is also why the meat or muscle of an adult wild salmon is pink. Farmed salmon raised on meal lacking the pigment have white appearing muscle. This is also why when you cook shrimp or lobster or crab they turn bright pink to red in color. Shrimps and lobsters don't look pink at first due to proteins in the shell obscuring the pigment. When the protein is denatured (cooked) it reveals the wonderful color. This is also true of the leaves of fall. When the green chlorophylls in the leaves are destroyed the reds and oranges and yellows of fall are revealed in their splendor! What about pink you say? I'll explain this next. Both astaxanthine and beta carotene are Carotenoids, a group of pigment molecules produced by plants and algae that range in color from yellow to red (the leaves of fall). They help absorb light and pass the energy to chlorophyll. They can be divided into two groups, xanthophylls and carotenes. The former containing oxygen and the later lacking. The coloration of these molecules is due to the length of their carbon chain with alternating single and double bonds, called conjugation. This chain absorbs light of various colors (energies). The more highly conjugated or the longer the chain the more red the pigment looks. The shorter the chain the more yellow the pigment. Changing the length changes the light absorption spectrum and therefore the color. Vitamin A (retinol) alpha and beta carotene, lycopene, and lutien are all vitamins and antioxidants as well as Carotenoids.Although the explanation of the caratinoids above is right on the money, its important to note FLAMINGOS ARE NOT PINK BECAUSE THEY EAT SHRIMP! Flamingos are pink because the things they eat have those pigments in them. True, flamingos do eat whats called a grass shrimp, but most of their diet is made up of diatoms and algae. In fact, most species of flamingo can't eat anything bigger than microscopic organisms. So to say that a flamingo is pink just because of shrimp is like saying humans grow healthy and strong because we drink milk. Yes, milk does help us do that, but it is a very small part of a diverse diet that we consume everyday. Also, the feathers are only temporarily that color, not stained pink. If a feather comes off, than it will return to its original white color while laying on the ground over time.flamingo chicks hatch a smokey grey color, which eventually lightens and turns pink when they lose their down.Flamingoes are pink because they eat shrimp rich in a pink protein which builds up in the birds feathers. Much like when you eat lots of carrots and you turn orange, or when you put a white flower in red water and the flower turns red.The phytoplankton that their food eats gives color to their feathers.

Can 1 large shrimp cause your dog to throw up?

It actually depends on how big the dog and the shrimp is if big the dog may throw up but if the shrimp is small, it will probably just be tired. I have a dog of my own and we fed her some shrimp in the past and nothing peculiar happened.
