This is the most common type of hummingbird. The males are easily recognized by the patch of red on their throat. They are common in the east but not the west. They migrate to the south in the winter.

They gather Nectar from flowers. I feed them sugar water with food coloring in a feeder. Most would say they are attracted to red but I put all different food coloring in the sugar water and they eat it too. The red throated birds can live as long as 9-12 years!! Too cool!! If you make your own food for them I use 1 cup water to 2 cups sugar. Just like you would make simple syrup on the stove. I keep mine in the fridge, the birds love it more when the food is cold on a hot day.

According to the Redlist, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are not endangered or threatened. Ruby-throated hummingbirds are native to the Americas and Canada. They spend their summer in the eastern half of the US and extreme southern Canada, migrate down into Central America and winter in South America. If you live in the western half of the US or northern Canada, Ruby-throated Hummingbird sitings are probably rare. To see the Redlist, see the Related Links.
