Mold appears green due to the presence of pigmented microbial species like Penicillium and Aspergillus that produce green-colored spores. These molds thrive in damp and humid environments, spreading and reproducing through spore formation, creating visible colonies with a green hue.

Why do plants have different colors? Why does anything have different colors? The different chemical composition of different substances causes them to absorb and reflect different frequencies of light. In this case, different molds absorb and reflect different parts of the visible light spectrum.

Not all moulds are green. Those that are get that colouration from two factors: * Just as butterflies achieve their colours from irridescence instead of pigmentation, some moulds have a green sheen because their surface structures reflect green light exclusively. * Other moulds such as the common bread mould, Aspergillus spp. produce pigments. Some of these pigments are related to melanin the same pigment that is responsible for skin colour. Moulds are fungi, so none would produce chlorophyll, the green pigment responsible for photosynthesis in green plants.

Mold is green due to its spores, which it uses to reproduce. The spores are the only part of mold that is pigmented.
