The darker the eyes, the more light is absorbed as light waves pass through the eye, and the less light is available to reflect within the eye. Light reflection (scatter) within the eye can cause susceptibility to glare (eg. sun or headlights) and to poor contrast discernment. Thus it seems that people with darker eyes may have better vision in high-glare situations - perhaps this makes them better night drivers, for example.

Eye colour may also affect your colour vision. Here it seems that lighter eyes may provide some advantages.

Blue eyes do not necessarily have better vision than other eye colors. Eye color does not determine visual acuity, which is more related to the structure of the eye, such as the shape of the cornea and lens, and the health of the retina. Eye color is determined by the amount and distribution of melanin in the iris.

Random genetics. If your mother has brown eyes and your father has blue, you could get blue or brown. If one grandmother had blue eyes and the rest had green, you could get blue or green. Again, random genetics.

Because of their light coloring, they take in more light then dark colored eyes. This also explains why people with blue eyes often are more sensitive to light.
