At birth, all bone marrow is red. With age, more and more of it is converted to the yellow type. About half of adult bone marrow is red. Red marrow is found mainly in the flat bones, such as the hip bone, breast bone, skull, ribs, vertebrae and shoulder blades, and in the cancellous ("spongy") material at the epiphyseal ends of the long bones such as the femur and humerus. Yellow marrow is found in the hollow interior of the middle portion of long bones.

Bone marrow is found within the cavities of bones, such as the long bones (e.g. femur, tibia) and flat bones (e.g. pelvis, sternum). There are two types of bone marrow: red marrow, which is involved in blood cell production, and yellow marrow, which consists mostly of fat cells.

Bone marrow is found almost in all the bones in your body. There is yellow bone marrow every where. You probably want to know the the location of the red bone marrow. In case of the young children the red bone marrow occupy the long bones also. In case of the adult the flat bones contain red bone marrow. So you have the red bone marrow in skull bones, ribs, sternum and the hip bones. In case of the foetus even the liver and spleen also produce the red blood cells.
