The bristlecone pine lives very high up in the western mountains of the US. It grows very slowly and is so tough it can withstand extremes of cold, wind, drought, bugs and disease and it lives for up to 5000 years. That is longer than any other single living organism.

How many grams of a 35 gram sample of radium will decay in 5000 years if the half-life of radium is 1602 years?

To determine the amount of radium that will decay in 5000 years, we need to find the number of half-lives that occur in that time period. Since the half-life of radium is 1602 years, approximately 3 half-lives occur in 5000 years. After 3 half-lives, the initial 35g sample will decay to approximately 4.375g.
