"Niche journalism" is exactly that: journalism in a certain specific area, a niche. Niche journalism allows journalists to focus on their target audience. You see niche journalism all over the internet and television. A good example of niche journalism is cable TV's ESPN. ESPN generally covers sports -- not politics, not food, not decorating, not weather. The opposite of niche journalism would be something like CBS' Early Show, television journalism that covers a wide variety of topics from politics to weather to fashion; it is not restricted to one certain topic in journalism. What is the need for niche? Well, besides being a lucrative business, niche journalism offers its readers/viewers a place to go to learn about something they're interested in without having to weed through a bunch of stuff they could care less about. So, if one wants to find out the scores to last night's big game, they may flip the channel to ESPN instead of sitting through an hour of general news and information to wait for a few minutes of sports scores.

Niche journalism focuses on a specific area of interest or target audience, such as technology, fashion, or parenting. The need for niche journalism arises from the desire to provide specialized, in-depth coverage on topics that may not receive as much attention in mainstream media, catering to a more focused readership seeking detailed and specialized content. This allows for a deeper exploration of specific subjects and can help build a dedicated and engaged community around those topics.
