A tamarack, or larch, tree is a coniferous (evergreen) tree. The interesting thing about this species is that unlike most other coniferous trees, this one loses its needles in the winter. They turn a lovely golden colour in the fall. Answer. The tamarack is specifically Larix larici'na a native of Eastern N.America Larix america'na is a synonym.
