There are a number of venereal diseases: chlamydia (the most common), trichomoniasis, viral herpes, gonorrhea, syphilis, genital warts, HIV, human papilloma virus, and bacterial vaginosis.

1. They are sexually transmitted.
2. Chlamydia Symptoms in men include: Painful urination or itching sensation with urination (often the first symptom). Cloudy urine. Watery or slimy discharge from the penis. Crusting on the tip of the penis.Tender anus or scrotum.
3. People get gonorrhea by having sex with someone who has the disease. "Having sex" means anal, vaginal, or oral sex. Gonorrhea can still be transmitted via fluids even if a man does not ejaculate. It can be transmitted even when there are no symptoms.
4. In syphilis: There are three stages: primary, secondary and tertiary. The primary stage occurs right after contact (average 21 days)and shows (usually) as a chancre (an ulcer). The secondary stage occurs 4-10 weeks later and is seen as lesions on the skin and on mucous membranes. These on the mucous membranes are called condyloma latum. All are infectious. The tertiary stage occurs after a latent phase 3-15 years later. It shows tumors called gummas. It is not contagious but affects most body systems. Untreated syphilis can remain active for years and affect the brain.
5. AIDS-HIV - Sexual and blood-mucous transfer.

As many as 65 million people in the United States have or have had at least one STD. Many people don't know they are infected because they have no symptoms. Other countries also have high incidences of STDs; for example, , South Africa has largest population living with HIV (6.3 million), followed by Nigeria(3.2 million), and India (2.1 million) .
