An advantage of neurosurgery is that is allows for a great deal of specificity and control in the location of damage, however a disadvantage is that the lesions and ablations can cause brain damage to other areas. It is also difficult to establish cause and effect if using neurosurgery to find out the cause of possibly a mental disorder, because it wouldn't be known whether the disorder is caused by the brain defect found, of if the brain defect is caused by suffering from the disorder.
