Hair is a protein thing. If the oils from your scalp do not get down the shaft of the hair, then it will break because it will get too dry. A brush is the most gentle way to do this process. A comb won't carry the oils nor remove the loose flakes of skin on your scalp.
When you brush vigorously, the hair will become "tamed" by the natural oils on your scalp. Plus it will shine.
If the extensions are glued in and attached to your natural hair, then no you can't brush your hair normally. You need to get a soft brush and lightly go over them. If you brush them normally then they pull get pulled and it would hurt and they would get damaged and come out. You need to be careful because some extensions that are glued in can't be brushed properly and go all matted and have to be taken out. If the extensions are not glued in then they have to be taken out while you brush your hair because they can get pulled and damaged and again it would hurt you.

To brush your hair?
A Hair Brush is used to make your hair slick and not-knotty. To use, gently comb hair-brush through hair.
The hair brush was first invented 1885,Mason Pearson invented the patented the pneumatic cushion for the hair brush, creating the actual hair brush.
To remove hair from a hair brush, you take a comb and comb the hair from the brush, once you have removed most of it from the brush using the comb, you can pick the rest of it out by hand.
When your hair is wet a comb is better. When your hair is dry you can use a comb or a brush but a vent brush is better than the typical brush.
