I believe it was made from powdered lead or antimony sulfide. But as these mixtures are potentially toxic (and now illegal in the US) I understand that modern preparations are made from soot and ghee. You need to check that the Kohl you use does not contain any of the heavy metals of the old traditional preparations.
Traditionally kohl was used for eye make-up.
That eye make-up is kohl, an ancient cosmetic, traditionally made by grinding galena (lead sulfide) and other ingredients.
Mainly eye make-up, such as kohl and malachite.
The Ancient Egyptians used many different types of makeup. Henna (a red or orange plant) was used to color nails and hair. Tinted clay called red ochre colored lips and skin. Khol was used for coloring the eyes.
Yes they did. The two kinds of eye makeup they used were green eye paint and black kohl (eyeliner). The green eye paint was made of malachite, and the black kohl was made from galena, Henna, a plant, was used by the ancient Egyptians to paint their nails and dye their hair. Makeup was very important to them at that time.
The Egyptians used a black stone similar to iron ore to make black eye makeup. This stone contained a great amount of lead. The stone was crushed and mixed with water.
Kohl. It's made out of antimony, lead and a bunch of other nasty stuff. Some people probably also used soot.
The Ancient Egyptians were very particular about their appearances, as they considered beauty to be a sign of holiness. Unsurprisingly, then, they developed cosmetics. They created black eye make-up using a black galena called kohl.
Many women used chalk to as a sort of foundation to make their faces more pale. Rose and poppies were common ingredients in rouge, and kohl was the main ingredient for eye make up.
The Arabic term al kohl refers to a preparation of antimony or lead used as eye make-up in several eastern countries. The ancient Egyptians also used eye make-up, for which the following terms were used:msdmt black eye paintsdm eye paintwADw green eye paint[Hieroglyphs did not record vowels so we can not know how these words were actually pronounced]. It is known that "green eye paint" was made from malachite, a natural green mineral found in Egypt, mixed with tree resin or animal fat - this remained slightly sticky and helped to trap any airborne particles of dust and sand to prevent them entering the eyes.Black "eye-liner" was made of antimony or lead, the same as Arabic kohl.
Khol. Correction: Kohl.
Well, the earliest I can think of is the ancient Egyptians, who used some kind of black Kohl eyeliner to create the famous V-shaped cat-eye look.
