You can usually fishtail any hair, but to make it look good on short hair, consider doing what i call a French fishtail. It's like a French braid but instead of braiding it normally, braid like a fishtail. Braiding it when it's damp might help keep the fly-aways together. Make sure to use hairspray. Methods for tying a fishtail braidFirst thing to do is divide the hairs into two sections parting from the middle. Brush can be used to part it evenly or even only with hands will do.Take a strand of hairs from the right section in the right hand and pulling out a thick thread of hairs from the left hand, add it in left section. Now do exactly the same involving the right section. For rest, take thin strand of hairs and keep adding to other sections. Continue till the end of your hairs.
Finish plaiting with a rubber band. You can also use hair pins according to your convenience as they also help in giving a sharper look. If you feel your braid is tight, then just slightly pull from sides to give a thicker look.

Usually you can YouTube this. I taught myself, and it's easier if you have a friend do it. How long is your hair? If it's long, its quite a bit easier to do one on yourself, rather than shorter like mine. I will link you a good video for this. But you if you have long hair then you should be able to make a ponytail (High, low, or medium) and then you start your regular fishtail braid from there, leave at least an inch a half at the end of the braid so you don't break your ends if you do this braid a lot. If you would like the hold to last longer, try braiding it extra tight, and hairspraying it. If you have fringe or bangs, try leaving a few extra pieces on the sides of your face to make it look softer, and more elegant. If you dance, or figure skate, or whatever sport but still want to use the fishtail, try pulling all of it back into the ponytail.
1. Brush your hair thoroughly to remove any knotting, ensuring that the hair does not retangle.
2. Select the section of hair you want to braid. If this is not all of your hair, ensure that it is sufficiently divided so that there are no stray hairs connected to the designated braiding section.
3. Keeping a good hold on this portion of hair, divide the section you want to braid into two even groups. Hold one section in each hand.
3. From the section in your left hand, select a small part of the hair (around 1/3 of the section) from the outermost side of the hair section. Pull this across to the other section, which you are holding in your right hand. Securely hold this in the right-hand section, to combine it with the section you are holding on the right.
4. Take a small section the same size (1/3) from the outermost side of the right section (which you have just added a small section to). Take it across your hair and combine it with the portion you are holding in your left hand.
5. Continue this procedure until you are satisfied with the length that the plait is. Fasten securely with an elastic hair band.
6. Decorate if you want. Ensure that the hair tie you have used blends well with your hair and is thin, not thick. If you want, you may add a decorative hair tie or a ribbon.

All rope stretches because it consists of materials at an angle to the load putting tension on the rope, and they try to straighten when pulled. How much the rope can stretch, and at what point the stretch weakens the rope, depends upon the materials used and the rope construction - laid up or braid, and the combinations of these.
