For solid coloring, you will want to do tightly grouped and small oval shaped motions working from the edge of the line outwards continuously overlapping the row before it for the best solid fill and no light spots. For gray shading, you will want to turn the machine down about half the speed that you run it for color shading, use either a light black diluted with Witch Hazel, or a pre-mixed graywash solution. For gray shading, you have to work fast with the machine if you want there to be no drag marks or "blotchy" areas of shade in the area. Rotary machines work great for graywashing, more so than coil machines in my opinion. For color shading, you want to go from light to dark, and then back into light, and with graywashing you simply want to go from light to dark. It's all up to you to perfect your stroke and your technique. Practice on your own thighs and calves before you start to work on other people.
