The buttocks protect the anal area. However, because the buttock cheeks sit close together, it is very common for the anal area to retain odors. Some tips that help most people include:

  • Make sure you wipe completely after a bowel movement. After wiping with toilet tissue, some people also use baby wipes to remove any remaining traces of feces. Make sure after using a baby wipe to again pat the skin dry with toilet tissue. Also, before flushing a baby wipe, make sure they are flush-able. If not, wrap the wipe in toilet paper and put it in the trash.
  • Many people also don't give good attention to washing the area, especially in the shower. Use a good soap, wash, and be sure to rinse with clear water.
  • After a bath or shower, be sure to completely dry between the buttocks. Our skin naturally has bacteria and yeast-- it's called the "normal flora"--meaning a normal balance of these germs exist on us all the time. But, when we sweat or stay wet in creases and where skin touches skin, the bacteria or yeast (often yeast first) can begin to grow. Yeast can cause red skin, red patches, and itching, before it advances into a bigger infection. Yeast infection of the skin can cause odor. So it's really important to keep dry.
  • Some people like foods that cause gas and odor when it goes through the intestine and comes out as feces and gas expulsion. If you have frequent gas, you'll need to adjust your diet, reduce the gas, and wash more frequently.
  • If you have anal sex, make sure to wash immediately after AND more frequently over the next few days, since anal sex can act as a trigger for bowel movements. Also IF you have unprotected anal sex (not a good idea), ejaculate can leak out, bringing fecal and sexual odor to the anal area where the buttocks 'trap' the odor.
  • Lastly, if the odor problem is severe, DO talk to your doctor. They are used to hearing 'every' kind of problem. They may be able to prescribe a skin cream to treat a possible yeast infection, or make other recommedations.

When possible, it is better to clean oneself (after defecating) with running water instead of (or after using) toilet tissue. When that isn't feasible, it may be possible to use moist wipes or tissue that has been wetted (after using dry tissues).

The object is to clean oneself as much as possible.

Showering sufficiently often is essential.

When one expects to be in intimate contact with someone, it is a very good idea to shower again even if one had showered several hours previously.
