Noxzema was developed as a sunburn remedy, but it turned out to be useful in treating the skin condition Eczema. Reportedly the cream was informally named "No eczema", and was officially changed (including an "x") when a customer wrote to say it had "knocked [their] eczema".

Eczema is a painful skin condition which causes patches of skin to become inflamed and rough. Itching and bleeding are later stages.
