there is a small difference in lube ( coming from the latin word: Lubersaph ) and oil, so it isn't a question that you need to know into a matter of substantionary work.
You can use synthetic 75W-90 if you are using a gasket between the diff cover and the housing. If you are using RTV sealant with no gasket, use the conventional gear oil 80W-90. It seems the synthetic lube dissolves the RTV sealer.
You do not "lube" the gasket with anything. If it is a flat paper gasket, you can use any shelac type sealer, but you don't have to as these will usually swell with contact with coolant and seal. If it is the kind that is a rubber ring around the thermostat itself, these require no sealant as pressure alone seal the housing to the motor.
Gear lube is thick and meant to cling to a manual transmissions gears, one gear will bring it to the next to lubricate them all. Transmission fluid is hydraulic fluid and is pumped through the system of an automatic transmission, it is thin and red ( usually)

first, your 'lingo' is the problem... a LOF (lube, oil and filter) consists of 1. drain oil, add new oil 2, replace oil filter with new one. 3. Lubricate the chassis (grease nipples) where it is added to lubricate suspension areas. these vary between cars, and most brands do not have any anymore.
Lube Oil Filter is another name mechanics use when performing an Oil Change service. The reason is that an Oil Change generally includes lubing various car joints, removing and replacing the engine oil and replacing the engine oil filter.
when the gasket between the engine block and crankcase is old , there is a possibility some lube oil to leak and reduce the level. Temperature in the engine cause metal friction can evaporate some lube oil indeed.
