The starter in a car is an electric motor that turns the gasoline engine. It has a rod of material (usually carbon) that carries electricity from the non-moving part of the motor to the moving part, and the rod 'brushes" against the moving part. That rod IS the "brush". PS- the rod wears away, and may need to be replaced n an older starter.

Yes, the starter for the Suzuki LT80 can be rebuilt. Armature and brush kits are available from various online sources. The actual rebuild is not difficult but getting the starter motor out can be. You have to lower the engine through the bottom of the frame to get it out. As of May 2008 the cost of an armature kit and brush kit is very close to the cost of an after market rebuild starter so while you can rebuild this unit it may not save you much if any money.

Hey Russ== Take it to the parts store like Autozone and they will check the starter, alternator and battery. goodluckJoe If your starter isn't working check for a single wire that is connected with a spade on the starter. ford had a problem with the spade corroding and not allowing the starter to work ( i think it might be the trigger wire). just wire brush the two connections and put them back together, or put a new connector on the wire.
Brush, brush, brush brush. And brush some more.
The future tense of "brush" is "will brush".
