When backing up, you need to be more alert and use your mirrors. Before you hit the gas, check each mirror to be sure that nothing is in your way, then turn around and actually look over your shoulder - this helps you to avoid the blind spots that are in each mirror. Slowly press the gas pedal - if you suddenly floor it, you might back up into something, or even find that you have the car in "Forward" by mistake. Also, if there is a small child or animal behind the car in a place where you cannot possibly see them, starting up slowly gives them time to get out of the way. Keep looking back over your shoulder as you reverse, and keep your steering wheel as straight as you can. Every few moments, glance into the side mirrors to be certain nothing is moving toward you. Keep your ears alert also - listen for noises like car horns or people yelling at you - often, other people will try to stop you if they see that you are going to run into something.
