i have a 2.4 in a Chevy cavalier i don't know what 2.4 you have but on mine its simple to align the timing.
make sure both camshaft spockets are 12oclock u will know when its timed cause there are holes on the camshaft spocket that fits 8mm bolts and there is a hole that they fit into so if the guide pins are 12 oclock then the 8mm hole would be around 6 7 oclock. once u have it aligned slap the bolts in and itll keep it in time while u bring the crankshaft to top dead center set your chain make sure that the chain is set on the sprockets correctly
it has a timing chain. its not a honda.
A 1998 Mercury Mystique , 2.5 liter V6 has : ( 1 timing CHAIN to each cylinder head , so there are 2 timing CHAINS )
timing chain and gears were replaced correct? if the problem started immediately after that was changed then most likely the timing is off.timing chain very rarely needs to be changed. the motor or trans usually goes before that. The timing gear and chain is recommended to be replaced every (I think) 50k miles, but usually goes longer than that. I'm going on 130k miles on a 720 I bought with 170k miles already on it and I'm getting ready to put in a secondnew timing chain (plus unknown number of replacements before I bought it). Engine and trans still haven't failed yet.If the timing chain was replaced incorrectly, the valve timing can be off anywhere from a little to a lot. This would definitely affect its performance. It is a difficult thing to check without disassembling.
Taurus uses chains. If it is a 3.0 liter 12 valve engine, it has one chain. If it is the 3.0 DOHC 24 valve engine, it has two chains.
The 2006 Honda Pilot has a timing belt. The engine is a J35 series SOHC 24-Valve 3.5L V6 motor with cylinder deactivation (2WD models only).
I don't know how much you know about the subject so I will start at the beginning. First you have to get to it, you can pull the motor or leave it in the vehicle. Its a little harder with it in depending on the space you have in engine compartment. If your leaving the motor in, which I imagine you are, your going to have to take the front end of the vehicle apart. Remove the grill, bumper if need be, radiator, fan, water pump, harmonic balancer, you will need to buy a puller and a installer for the harmonic balancer. You can get a puller kit from harbor frieght tools for $10. You can buy the installer from summit raceing (web site) for arround $30 or you can buy one that will do both the install and removal from summit for $70. Once you have removed your harmonic balancer you can remove your timing cover to expose your timing chain. Turn the motor using a socket wrench until the timing marks on the crank gear and cam gear line up. The marks are usually just white dots, you want the crank mark to be up towards the cam and the cam mark towards the crank, the marks will be up and down from each other. Once you have the marks lined up remove the bolts holding the timing chain to the cam and crank. Remove the timing chain as a whole unit with the cam and crank gear still on it. If the crank gear doesnt want to come loose use your puller on it. when you get it off just put your new gear on and line up the timing marks then put it back on as one unit. If you cant get the crank gear on all the way by hand buy a crank install tool (summit) they run about $24. While you have the thing apart it would be a good Idea to put a new timing chain on. Depending on your vehicle this would also be a good time to change your cam if need be. Its not that hard to do it just takes a while, take your time and don't force anything. The Rover v6 has 3 timing belts (cam belts) they must be changed every 90000kilometers, if the belts snap you will have to replace all 24 valves, Do not forget to replace the idler pulley as well.
