NEED TO KNOW THE YEAR. Some years had the 2-piece seal and some had the 1-piece seal.
All engines after 1986 give are take a month have the 1-piece seal and you must remove the engine are the transmission to replace the seal. OIL
Pan does not need to come off.
If it is older then a 86 then you will have to remove the oil pan and the oil pump and rear main cap on the crankshaft to replace the seal. Either way BIG JOB.

∙ 14y agohow do you change a rear main seal in a Chevy 350 motor
Yes, That would be the easiest thing 2 do.
Yep, they have one. 1986 and older has a two piece rear main seal. 1987 and up has a one piece rear main seal.
You can pull the transmission or engine, witch ever you think would be the easyest for you. But you have to remove one of them to replace the rear main. It is a 1 piece seal and it drives over the back of the crankshaft.
YES it does. Must remove oil pan, Oil pump and rear main bearing cap to service the rear main seal.
The lip on the seal always goes towards the pressure are the fluid.
Drop the oil pan, remove thrust bearing cap, loosen all the mains, use a screwdriver to push the old main seal out a little, then use the new seal to push out the old seal the rest of the way.

1986 and older are 2 piece.
If it is a late month of 1987( Build date) then it has a 1 piece solid round rear main seal in it and you will need to remove the transmission and fly-wheel and then pop the seal out and drive the new 1 in place. If it was built before late 1987 then you will have to remove the oil pan and rear main cap to service the rear seal. It will have a 2 piece seal in it.
