The spring side goes TOWARDS the engine , and if the thermostat has a vent hole it goes to the top if it is a vertically mounted thermostat
use the factory installed call an auto parts store and they will tell you the right thermostat you should be using

Drain radiator. Follow the upper radiator hose to the engine. The end of the radiator hose connects to the thermostat housing. Remove housing and pull out thermostat - be sure and note which direction the thermostat points.
