You can replace it from top, the dpfe sensor is located under the throttle at the drivers side of the engine and it hooks on two pipes and electric connector.
You have to remove the air cleaner, MAF sensor, throttle and the throttle sensor connector to get to it. It is hidden behind few hoses and connectors so you need too look real hard.

You remove and install the engine from the top.
check the front of the engine at the bottom for an electrical plug
Only the 1999 Ford Taurus SHO has a timing belt. The engine is built by Yamaha and NO it is not an interference engine. Replace the belt at 100,000 miles. All other Ford Taurus's have timing chains.
1996 Taurus never equipped w/ 4 wheel drive
Remove engine, disassemble, replace piston, re-assemble engine and install. Good times!
