you go onto first gear
get in push the clutch then turn the key and put in 1st gear and drive Clutch in, as above, 1st, drive the car, clutch in, 2nd, then so on. To stop, never let your gears slow you down, foot on brake, then into first when you stop.

You shouldn't drive close at all in poor driving conditions. Give yourself plenty of space between you and the car in front of you and slow down.
If there are no cars coming on the opposite lane, slow down A BIT and drive along the very side of the road so the other car can easily drive past you. You don't actually have to do this, but it's polite.
I would first honk my horn to try to get their attention, and slow down as much as possible. If there is no avoiding the oncoming car i would drive off the road and aim for something soft to hit like bushes.

If the car is straight drive check the transmission fluid for full. Check the u joints on a rear wheel drive. Look for any loose parts on the exhaust system as well to try and find the humming problem.
Friction between the tires and the road surface can slow down a car going down a ramp. The brakes can also be applied to introduce additional friction and slow the car further. Additionally, aerodynamic drag can play a minor role in slowing down the car at higher speeds.
