It could be anywhere. Here's how to tell, if the wires aren't hooked up. Crawl under the right side of the car and remove the valve cover. Next, get someone to rotate the engine clockwise with a 30mm wrench on the crank pulley until both valves are closed--you'll be able to wiggle the rockers up and down. Now remove the distributor cap and look at the small end of the rotor. Whichever way it's pointing is the tower for the number 1 cylinder. Now if the wires ARE hooked up, things are different: follow the spark plug wire from the front (front is front of the car) right cylinder to the distributor.
number one wire will point to the number one cylinder
in number 1
where is number one on a vortex 4.3 v-6 distributor cap
no1 on the distributor always points towards the no one cylinder
The marked # 1 position on the distributor cap faces to the FRONT
To find where number one spark plug wire connects to the distributor, remove the distriutor cap and set number one piston at Top Dead Center (TDC). At TDC, the rotor should be pointing to where number one spark plug wire connects.
# 1 position on the distributor cap faces to the REAR and slightly towards the drivers side Maybe, or any one of the other 7 spots. A distributor can be put in several different spots as far as which point on the distributor is number 1. If you have not had the distributor out of the engine, take number one plug out and hold your finger over the hole and crank the engine by hand until you feel the compression building. Watch the crank shaft pulley for the timing mark and when it gets to the pointer, that is number 1. Look under the distributor cap to see which one the rotor is pointing at.
The wire sequence on the distributor cap just goes 1 thru 6, clockwise, starting from the number one position (which should be marked either on the cap or distributor).
Goes to driver's side bank at very front-follow the wire
It has to face the same place it was when it was removed.
