this is the lever that enables high and low gear for 4wd.
how to replace high/low beam, turn signal lever on 1996 subaru outback wagon
By door sill just left of driver's seat.
to The left of the foot pedals, just below the hood release lever
When you open the door to get into the car, you will see a knob just behind the parking brake lever. Just pull it straight up and the rear hatch lock will release.
Depending on what year model it is you unscrew the center console and just behind the handbrake lever the brake wire has a lock nut and nut on the end of it you can use these nuts to either tension up or release tension from the brakes, don't over tension it otherwise you will wear down your brakes while driving.
You have to start by opening the console storage compartment. There are two screws at the front of the compartment. You remove those and work your way forward, lifting the panel around the selector lever. Easy.
There is no "extra gear lever". I am at a loss as to why there would be one or what it would do.
Solved the problem myself. Have to disassemble rear panels inside rear hatch until you find cable leading to gas tank door. About a hour or two. Replug plastic unit that opens gas door. Later glued it in place so this may not happen again.
Even the manual is vague here. You need to look under the chrome trim where the main hatch lever is. Off to the far right is a handle which, if you get down and look, appears to be a vent or something. Put your fingers in and pull up, this will release the hatch... then pull up on the small handle on the hatch itself.
The hood release is below the dashboard and to the far left. It will raise the hood just far enough for you to reach under the middle of the front of the hood. Push the release lever there to the left to fully raise the hood.
a hood release lever is a lever that releases the hook in the front of the car so it can pop open.
