First off, never take the Washington Bridge. I have been in bumper to bumper traffic on the Washington Bridge which added two hours to my trip. The best alternative to the Washington Bridge is to take the Tappan Zee Bridge. It is about 15 or 20 minute longer, but it can save you hours of waiting in traffic.

If you are coming from Hartford I believe the best route to take is... I84 west, to I684 south, to I287 west, to The Garden State Parkway south, to The New Jersey Turnpike South (also known as I95 south). Stay on I95 south forever. You could take alternate routes around cities such as Baltimore or Washington if you want to, like I295 or I495, but they always lead back to I95.

As far as what roads to take when you exit I95, there are a few different ways that I have tried and they are all about the same distance and time. Just take whatever route your GPS or favorite online map (Google Maps, Map Quest, ect.) tells you to take.

I find the best time to leave is around 11:00pm. If you start this journey at that time you should be away from any major cities during peek traffic hours. Although, I only make three or four pit stops, so if you plan on stopping more, you should plan the time you leave accordingly.

The trip can take anywhere from 12.5 to 15 hours depending on how fast you drive and how many stops you make. When I only make three pit stops and if I speed I usually make it there in 13 hours.
