In automotive racing the purpose of a spoiler on a vehicle is to provide additional down force on the rear wheels at high speed which serves to better transfer the car's power to the ground. The use of spoilers on non racing consumer vehicles is almost always a cosmetic enhancement only as the speeds required to provide any performance enhancement generally aren't obtainable by street legal vehicles.

If one has a rear spoiler on a vehicle the main purpose is to provide better aerodynamics for the vehicle. Many have a rear spoiler simply for styling purposes.
a spoiler is used to hold down the back of car when driving at high speeds :)
In order to add a car spoiler to a car, one must first take accurate measurements of both the spoiler and the location of installment under the trunk. Once space has been verified and the spoiler bought, the wing brackets on the spoiler should be put together and the bolts tightened. Holes should be drilled through the top sheet metal of the trunk and the underside large enough for the spoiler bolts to pass through. The spoiler can then be attached to the trunk, being sure to place the washers before tightening the bolts.

A car spoiler is an aerodynamic device mounted on a vehicle's rear to disrupt airflow and reduce lift. This helps improve traction and stability at higher speeds. Some spoilers are purely cosmetic while others have a functional purpose.
The spoiler on a car is meant to create down force on the back or front of a car depending on where it's placed... Which means that yes it does increase friction but it also helps with traction at higher speeds
