As a lifetime travel agent specializing and knowledgeable about Mexico I would first warn you that land travel between Mexico City and Huatulco can be quite dangerous and I am not talking about roadkill alone. Oaxaca roads are sometimes treacherous and banditos are live and well in what is one of it's poorest states of the union. There are first class busses that fare quite well and are cheap. Do not dress in anything fancy and leave jewels at home. You can get exact routing, mileage, etc. right here on internet. Just keep plunking the keyboard using distinct needs all including the name "Oaxaca". Bien Venido!!
PS - I'm not familiar with the Answers.com website so note that the first paragraph starting with "A" is not me. I could not find where the "A" comes in to signify me as a new separate entry.

Huatulco in Mexico is a relatively safe place to stay. Mexico city and the border towns can be dangerous but Huatulco is a beautiful and interesting place to visit. You are never 100% safe anywhere and Huatulco does not represent a great risk at the current time.

Minimum distance is 522 kilometers (324 miles) on a straight line. Road distance is 942 kilometers (585 miles) over a 11-hour, non-stop drive. Your best bet is to take a flight from Oaxaca to Ixtapa. If there aren't any non-stop flights, you could take one from Oaxaca to Mexico City, and then another from Mexico City to Ixtapa. Flight time would be around 2 hours, not including the time you spend in between flights.
