I think the best way to clean a windshield is by using alcohol with a clean rag or towel. It does a great job on the inside and outside and its inexpensive. Using a spray bottle makes it easier.
I'll let you in on a little secret I discovered at car shows- first use a window cleaner and paper towels to get the big stuff-window cleaner with ammonia works well especially if there is cig smoke, after use chrome polish and a lint free rag- i know it sounds strange but professionals in car shows do it that way and it works better than anything I have tried.
