For the 1987 Chevrolet S-10 with a 2.8 liter engine, the torque specs for the cylinder head bolts is 40 ft. lbs. The torque specs for the crankshaft damper bolt is 70 ft. lbs. For the oil pump bolts and the oxygen sensor, the torque is 30 ft. lbs.
Tighten the1/4 inch bolts 7-9 ft. lbs of torque, and the 5/16 bolts to 12 ft. lbs. torque.

drain the oil from the vehicle, unbolt the oil pan, scrape old gasket from pan and crankcase. check the torque specifications for the oil pan bolts (shouldnt be very high). replace the gasket and oil pan to factory torque specs. put drain plug back in and fill with factory specs of oil.

Check the specs for the vehicle you are working on (You can find them on the net if you do not have the manual) and the torque requirements will be there. Do not over torque the bolts as removing a broken valve cover bolt is a pain. Good luck.

The oil pan bolt torque specifications, on your C 12 Caterpillar diesel engine, is 15 pounds per square inch. The bolts should be torqued in five pound intervals.
Be very careful when tightening the bolts holding any oil pan. It's not exactly rocket science, but all the bolts need to be tightened by hand, and all the same amount to avoid warping and possible cracks.
