I think it depends on a couple of things, especially mileage and worth of car. If you have a fairly nice car with a pretty good value that will last a long time, the extra $2000 on an engine may be worth it. If you have an older car with 200,000 miles on it already, don't bother! I say this from personal experience having just done it- not worth it. I should have put that money down towards buying a better car!

With any car, it would be better to buy a new engine. You do not know where the used engine came from and how long it will run. Unless you have a very trusted repair person, a new engine is recommended.
