When trying to unlock your 97 grand am by using a slim jim the first thing you want to decide is, do your locks go up and down or back and forth. This will tell you what direction you need to move the slim jim to get the car to unlock. The next thing you want to do is insert the slim jim under the rubber piece next to the door. Once you find the lock rod , move the slim jim in the direction your locks move.

with the key... or a slim Jim Key is not working at the door
No. Once, I locked my keys in the car and the slim Jim did not work. The AAA guy ended up using a hanger-like thing to manually open the door. Another time the AAA guy used some sort of door "jimmy" (sorry, I don't know the name of the tool he used), which took <5 seconds.

If it's electric you have to "pop" it from the middle, NOT from where the key lock is. CAUTION....CAUTIONOne needs to be VERY Careful about USING A slim Jim on some of the Later model cars (not sure if Buick falls in this category) which have air bags in the door panels. I'm told by the local police department that they will no longer do this to unlock a car. Another police department had a policeman killed when he inserted a slim Jim into a car door and hit the air bag mechanisim. The air bag exploded forcing the slim Jim upward through the neck and lower throat of the police officer....KILLING HIM.
Call a locksmith or some towing company have slim Jim and will unlock your vehicle for you for a small fee.
