Nothing. Dealers do it free if you are buying a car, or are interested in a car. But they won't run a Carfax on a vehicle you already own just for your own use to see the car's history. If you want a Carfax for your car go to the Carfax site and it costs $40

Let me add... I did a test of CarFax and I think you can use it but don't trust it! I had a car that was in a major accident and fully repaired by the dealer (factory authorized dealer) and about three years after that I paid for a Carfax Report, for that specific VIN number, and the results said zero REPORTED problems. There was over $7,000 of extensive repairs done to that vehicle. So don't trust it as the final determining factor. Even the advertisement says..."As reported to Carfax..."

Car Fax will tell you where the car was last registered and it will tell you witch dealers have had your car in their inventory and where they got it from. Car Fax will not give you the names of private individuals who have owned your car and with out the previous plates it would be difficult to find out who had owner ship of it. You could see if the title history is kept from owner to owner through the dmv.
You can buy cars at new car dealers, used car dealers, or from a private seller. Just make sure you buy from a trusted dealer be it new or used. Especially if it is used. Ask friends and neighbors about the used car dealers in your area. Contact the Better Business Bureau to find out which dealers are honest. Be very careful buying from a private seller. Above all do 2 things when the car is used. Get a Car Fax report on any car you want to buy, and have it inspected by a trusted mechanic.
Only if the phone call used to sent the FAX has a toll charge associated with it. The FAX itself does not cost anything.
The fax number for Detroit Auto Dealers Association is the same as their telephone number: +1 248-643-0250. This is manned every weekday but not at weekends.
