The price of a car in the 1980 is about the same as now when you adjust for inflation. But today you get many more features on the car than you did then. ABS, Traction Control, USB connections, much better sound system, and a much safer ride that is much more reliable. Cars sold today are pretty much maintenance free for the first 100,000 miles except for routine maintenance. Not so in the 80s.
