Thousands upon thousands are sold per year. It must be an almost astronomical number if you combine lots, dealers, interpersonal communication and auctions. The latter could be very surprising. Just take a look at a site like GovernmentAuctions.org - they have such a huge listing of police seized and government surplus cars. Although they aren't typical "used" cars, they have been operated before and usually are in better shape than anything on a lot.
