Actually, it's a journey I often make. From the by-pass at the south edge of Edinburgh, go straight down the A1. Even within the speed limits, you will normally pass Newcastle in well under 2 hours: from there, York is maybe another hour, perhaps 70 minutes, still travelling south on the A1 until you tuen of (and follow) the A59 into York
