Firstly remove the positive battery cable.
Remove the starter motor no need to remove the wiring and leave the starter to rest on the pipework. There is no need to remove it from the engine bay. Your probably asking yourself why the hell did he do that! Just bear with me.
Remove the Power Steering and alternator belts.
Remove the fan and pulley.
Remove the fan shroud if you like I didn't as there is enough room.
With the hand brake on and the gearbox in nuetral jack the vehicle up and place it on stands.
Remove the large front bash plate.
Remove the smaller front guard above this. Note I will not be replacing this as the bash plate provides adequate protection to this area.
Using a 24 mm or 15/16" socket rotate the engine while looking at the exposed flywheel from where the starter motor was removed. As you turn you will see some balancing holes in the face of the flywheel. Some of these holes are deep enough to place a bolt in. It is this that will lock the crankshaft against the bell housing which will enable you to undo the harmonic balancer bolt. Use a bolt that is just a tiny bit smaller than the hole diameter.
Slowly apply force to the bolt until the crankcase locks up then keep going, you will require quite a bit of effort and the bolt will give way with a crack. I used a 3/4 drive socket to remove the bolt although I reckon a 1/2" drive breaker bar will do it.
To remove the harmonic balancer place a screw driver between the balancer and the timing gear cover and gently apply force while hitting the side of the pulley with a soft hammer. I used a brass hammer to provide the shock without damaging the pulley grooves. Be patient and within 5 minutes the harmonic blancer was removed. Note do not lever from the bottom area of the timing cover as it is quite thin use the sides.
