It will dirty the injectors a bit and run very rough,if at all. Still, not as bad as putting petrol into a diesel engine .

unscrew the injector lines from the top of the diesel injectors, and from the injection pump. The diesel injectors can be removed with a 27mm deep socket ratchet head, or a 27mm wrench. Be very, VERY careful to keep the threads clean or you can crack the head when putting new injectors in. If your injectors are bad, they've also probably damaged your glow plugs. You should probably replace them too (they're just under the injectors on the front of the cylinder head).

By doing a pressure and spray pattern check, this can either be costly or messy, depending on if you do it yourself or have them tested at a shop. Most times it is just a safe bet to replace all of the injectors on diesels, but I have to warn you if the diesel you are speaking of has mechanical injectors (no wires running to each injector) you may have a problem with the injection pump($$$$$), most common problems are the pump is out of time, or somewhere a seal is failing or has failed, or it needs a fuel delivery system cleaning and filter replacement. I have never actually heard of mechanical diesel injectors being replaced due to wear, although I am sure that has happened once or twice before.

It is completely normal for a diesel to smoke black. But, if it just now started to smoke black and everything on the truck is stock, go get it checked out by a mechanic. You could have bad fuel injectors or a dirty air filter. Start with the simple stuff first. And, I'd say from it being a 2004 Powerstroke 6.0L, that your injectors are probably bad.
