The clutch pedal will have more play in it before catching. A good clutch catches near the floor, while a bad clutch must travel further for the clutch plate to meet the flywheel. If the pedal travels close to the top of it's path, then the clutch is probably wearing low.

When you engage the clutch and the engine sits there spinning: it get's no traction OR when there is no pressure on the clutch pedal: pressing it changes nothing.
If it has stretched to the point where you can't disengage the clutch any more that would be a good sign, also if it breaks of course.
