You need to properly evacuate A/C system, then remove compressor. Install new part, properly charge A/C system. Ensure you are using proper type and amount of compressor oil.
1. Discharge the a/c system.... 2. Remove the drive belt... 3. Remove the a/c clutch wire pigtail... 4. Remove the a/c hose assembly.. 5. Remove the front and rear bolts... 6. Remove the compressor... 7. Reverse to install... 8. Evacuate and recharge... 9. Add the correct amount of freon and oil......
The entire system takes about 8 oz. That is spread out thru all the components. If a hose didn't blow where you would lose alot of oil and you are just replacing the compressor, I would add 3 oz to the pump during installion. Add 4 to 5 ounces of oil into the a/c compressor and then prime it on the bench before you install it.........
Evacuate A/C system and properly dispose of old refrigerant. Replace part. Perform a complete A/C system service (SAFELY & PROPERLY). (Personell certified to handle refrigerant may need to install correct type and amount of compressor oil and refrigerant)
It means charging the A/C system with the proper kind and amount of refrigerant + oil. Overcharging the system will damage the compressor.
Behind the a/c compressor, driver's side.
Its a bit of a job, but in order to do it correctly, you need to remove the alternator and water pump and then you will have clear working area to remove and install the A/C compressor.

Nothing if the compressor bearings are good. Just unplug the wires at the compressor or pull the fuse. If the compressor is locked up or the bearings are shot, then you need to purchase a belt for a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire that came from the factory without A/C. Install the belt, bypassing the compressor, and just leave the compressor alone.
# Have the A/C discharged # Disconnect the negative battery cable # Disconnect the compressor clutch electrical connector # Remove the drivebelt # Disconnect the refigerant lines from the top rear of the compressor.Plug the open fittings to prevent entry of dirt and moisture # Unbolt the compressor from the mounting brackets and lift it out of vehicle # Follow the directions with the new compressor regarding the draining of excess oil prior to install # The clutch may have to be transferred from original to the new one
